This is a travel blog, commentary, on raising worldly humans, luxury family adventure, and six weeks of jungle truth in Costa Rica.
There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over you at 30,000 feet — somewhere between two oceans, somewhere between the person you were and the one waiting on the other side of the landing gear. I know this quiet well. I’ve chased it my entire adult life.
Now I chase it with children.
My two are young. They are curious. They are fearless in the way only children who have been allowed to be fearless can be. They have passports that are getting worn at the edges. And no, they don’t have phones.
This is not an accident. This is a philosophy.
What I Do and Why I Do It This Way
I’m Rachael O’Brien, Founder of How Far Adventures and a Virtuoso-affiliated luxury travel advisor. Before I planned other people’s journeys, I spent years reporting on the world as a television journalist — in the U.S. Virgin Islands, in Atlanta, in New York City. I wrote about travel and lifestyle.
I produced stories about the human condition.
That career taught me one enduring truth: the best stories happen when people step out of their comfort and into the unfamiliar.
I build luxury and adventure travel experiences for families and multi-generational groups who are done with the predictable.
My clients are professionals with full lives and genuine taste.
They want to go somewhere that will change them not just photograph them. They need someone to trust with the whole architecture of it. That’s where I come in.
Every journey I design carries a producer’s instinct for pacing, a journalist’s demand for authenticity, and a mother’s understanding of what it means to travel with people you love and what it does to all of you.
A Story From the Jungle
Pablo Picasso famously said that every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain one once we grow up.
Six weeks in Costa Rica was my answer to that problem.
At cruising altitude, somewhere over the Caribbean, I sat my children between two oceans with the great unknown ahead of us. Call it what you want — Pura Vida or Vida Loca — but what we were flying toward wasn’t a resort or a package deal. It was a reckoning. A beautiful, sweaty, ant-lined, howler-monkey-serenaded reckoning.
We ate empanadas from a cooler. Pollo from a skewer on a dirt street. Fried eggs in a communal kitchen with a line of industrious sugar ants who, honestly, had more organizational instinct than I did that first week. The creature comforts dissolved. The 95-degree heat had its say. The internet was no match for the howler monkeys.
And yet.
My children bloomed. Adventure will do that. Resourcefulness will do that. So will the quiet humility of realizing you are not,in fact, the center of the universe — that the world is wider, older, and more generous than you imagined from the comfort of your own classroom and car line!!
I made up my mind early: I would raise culturally conscious, globally aware humans. Travel is the truest classroom I know. It challenges their abilities, pushes their edges, makes them better stewards of a planet that desperately needs stewardship. It forges identity. It builds the foundation that adulting — real, grounded, compassionate adulting — requires.
Six weeks in the Costa Rican jungle gave my children all of that. And it gave me something too. It reminded me, once again, why I do this work as a luxury travel advisor.
What Luxury Family Adventure Actually Looks Like
Luxury is not a thread count, though I do appreciate a beautiful bed. It is access. It is curation. It is arriving somewhere and feeling like the world has been arranged, just slightly, in your favor because someone who loves this work has been there before you.
Through my Virtuoso membership and Gifted Travel Network affiliation, I offer my families and multi-generational groups preferred partnerships, Elite Hotel Group access, and the kind of insider knowledge that turns a good trip into a defining one.
Whether it’s a first African safari, a European river cruise across three countries, an immersive Caribbean journey where barefoot luxury meets real culture, or a six-week family worldschool adventure — I design with intention. I listen to who you are and who you want your children to become.
And then I build the bridge.
Are You Ready?
If you are a time-rich dreamer or a time-poor one — if you have the longing and the means and you simply need someone to trust — I am here. I am selective with my clients because I am serious about their experience.
Let’s plan something that moves you. Not just from place to place, but from one version of yourself to the next.
