Highway, Heartland, Heart of Rock-n-Roll

Today in travel news, select Caribbean Islands, Mexico, and Costa Rica are all giving us signs that indicate summer openings but some of the main US flight carriers, including Southwest haven’t gotten the memo.

Airlines, we have a problem. Resorts say come, flights stay grounded. So we wait. And reminisce.

My parents took me to a lot of concerts in the early 1980’s. God Bless them. My Mom played Neil Young in our house, my Dad rocked Ronnie Milsap in the Ford truck, and my oldest brother introduced me to Van Halen and Journey to my delight. But there was one band we saw many times and could all agree on, Huey Lewis and the News.

While we may still be under a shelter in place order and our dancing is six feet apart, I’m reflecting.

So, in the spirit of my favorite escape those and these days ( Music) and an ode to the very near future of traveling (Domestic) here are four cities of mention from one of Huey’s hit songs, The Heart of Rock n Roll.

New York, New York

“is everything they say and no place that I’d rather be…”

I love this city! Who doesn’t? I consider myself lucky to have lived in fabulous Manhattan and got to check it off my lifelong bucket list. It literally has something for everyone.  I recommend a stay at one of How Far Adventures preferred spots, Joie de Vivre Hotel 50 Bowery NYC. It places you in the heart of New York, minutes from Brooklyn Bridge and in the eclectic Lower East Side. From the decor, the energy, and  the culinary choices, this hotels embodies NY and the neighborhood with a past. Even though CBGB, the birthplace of punk is no longer, the music scene is alive and well. Best part of staying on the Bowery, you are walking distance to my favorite music venue in Manhattan the Bowery Ballroom. I am a downtown girl myself but heading a little uptown, guests also love boutique Hotel Andaz 5th Avenue. Positioned on Bryant Park and across from iconic NYC Public Library, you can stay in true comfort and feel like a NYC local on the pulse of the city that never sleeps. A hot spot venue where I’ve seen many a show is Irving Plaza for up and coming musicians or there’s always nearby Carnegie Hall for the well practiced.

Los Angeles, California

“LA, Hollywood, and the Sunset Strip is something everyone should see…”

Staying in the heart of it is always a great idea in any city. And LA is no exception. Those who call Los Angeles home know the city is in a class all of its own and claims every stereotype one can imagine. Chamberlain West Hollywood is a stunning and intimate hotel within a 10-minute walk of famous Sunset Strip and Whiskey a Go Go. This 4-star hotel debuted its multi million dollar renovation and it is gorgeous without being too pretentious. Why else do I love it?  The legendary Troubador is around the corner and no music hall can match this bar’s rich history. With a capacity of 400 it is ideal for an up close and personal with your favorite musicians.  Heck, anywhere LA is worth the splurge. If you want to get out of the city of angels, head down the coast to the luxurious Monarch Beach Hotel on Dana Point.

This exquisite five diamond property is nestled on the hillside overlooking the Pacific exudes casual elegance and is ideal for families wanting to soak up the OC’s California lifestyle Grab a bite at one of the resort’s collection of seven Farm to Table restaurants, check the kids at the Kid’s Club and hit the The Coach House for some good, clean, fun!

Washington, District of Columbia

“Everywhere there’s music, real live music, bands with a million styles…”

Whether you are a history buff, a budding politician, or just want to get a deeper sense of our amazing American legacy by taking in the sights, Washington DC is the place to go… In my experience, the museums, galleries, landmarks are perfect for a solo or a family destination.  The educational experiences are plentiful and the music scene is the same, a diverse landscape. Are you surprised?  I was too! How Far Adventures loves the Kimpton Hotel Group so Hotel Monaco and Hotel Palomar get billing here. Both luxury boutique hotels recently emerged as the discerning choice among our guests that love downtown Washington DC and both are conveniently near 9:30 Night Club. While I have not experienced this bar that Rolling Stone Magazine named one of the top live music venues in America, it’s on my list. Just as soon as I can make it out of the National Air and Space Museum with my youngsters.

Austin, Texas

“They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating and from what I’ve seen I believe ’em..”

Texas is first and foremost my birthplace and holds a big spot in my heart. For those of you that haven’t been, Texas is such a diverse and underrated vacation destination. San Antonio ranks high with the beautiful Riverwalk and who can forget the Alamo? But I especially love Austin because it’s home to so many amazing festivals!  Particularly MUSIC FESTIVALS!  While there are always events happening in the summer, Austin is a year-round dream destination.  Austin City Limits is such a popular event and growing every year. My picks: The Four Seasons Austin and Lake Austin. It boasts an unrivaled setting on the banks of Lady Bird Lake. Relax and rejuvenate in a welcoming, luxurious space and then hit the music circuit. This haven is steps away from so much entertainment. Look for the iconic neon sign at Continental Club , it is a must for any visitor. If the bar scene isn’t your jam, The Four Seasons hosts a live music showcase during ACL ( Austin City Limits) on its idyllic back lawn. Yes, please.

Honorable Mention:

Nashville, Tennessee

Huey Lewis may not pay homage.

But, how can I not mention Music City? The home of the Grand Ole Opry,  The Nashville Scene is a music lovers paradise and a honeypot host to swanky and sophisticated boutique hotels. Love Virgin Hotels and Kimpton Aerston Hotel is chic and laid back retreat situated in a mellow Midotwn which is a local and walkable neighborhood. Relax on their rooftop bar with a whiskey or run don’t walk to Music Row where the locals play and sway. Ryman Auditorium is the fan favorite for headliners and if the more rowdy toe tapping adventure calls, Kid Rock’s Honky Tonk Bar will rock your boots off. Trust me.
