Hierarchy of Vacation Needs

Make no mistake about it, we are living in a crazy and continual time of uncertainty.

The absolute upheaval of life that Covid 19 has created for so many is unfathomable. Now, marry an angry natural disaster to a global pandemic and watch the disruptions multiply.

With hurricane season now upon us, we’re bracing for the turbulence it also brings. The Hierarchy of Needs: Air, Water, Food and Shelter is at top of the mind. But one more essential need should be added to the life giving pyramid. Vacation! Yes, Vacation!

I’ve been watching the new travelogue on Netflix called Down To Earth. I love this show. Hollywood star, Zac Efron in all his boyish enthusiasm shines a light on the wonder filled world as we know it, our valuable place in it, and how we can make a difference through travel and awesome awareness.

It makes me proud to have wanderlust and the desire to know and do more on a global level.

Here are a few of of my favorite resorts in locales the show features that provide us with our vacation bare necessities; Sustenance, Solace, Simplicity and Sustainability.

Air and Water:

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is no stranger to the wreckage hurricane brings. Irma and Maria wreaked havoc on the island which still has yet to recover. A Bed and Breakfast called Casa Sol in Old San Juan was a refuge for so many residences as the owners had the foresight to install solar panels and multiple cisterns for water catching.  The electricity and drinking water were saviors. A cue soon taken by Dorado Beach.

A sanctuary tucked away on the Puerto Rico Caribbean coast, Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a resort too good to be true. Fresh air and silky water everywhere . A stay here is replete with extraordinary moments. At this private Puerto Rican resort, serenity and casual luxury are both alive and well. This is literally an island retreat encircled by coral reefs, blue Caribbean waters, and lush vegetation.  Dorado pursued and achieved a LEED Silver Certification, which is awarded to properties that achieve a particular level of sustainability

Puerto Rico is OPEN, it is a US Territory and needs our vacation dollars and affection. Please contact me and learn more about the Virtuoso amenities you will receive when you book with How Far Adventures.

SHELTER:

Pacuare Lodge, Turrialba, Costa Rica

The good news is even though it is in the Caribbean, hurricanes are not a concern and have never made landfall in Costa Rica!  Also a thriving Blue Zone. People in the blue zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day except maybe an Imperial.  But the move. Costa Ricans are also leading examples of living off the land, seeking adventure, and knowing how to downshift. No stress.  Pura Vida.

Pacuare Lodge is a luxury, eco-hotel with only 20 suites and situated on the banks of one of the most scenic, white-water wonders, the Pacuare River. The vibrant nature offers a scenic backdrop to adventure, LITERALLY! The adventure begins before you arrive, rafting the Pacuare River’s white waters to the lodge’s jungle glory shores (or you can always take the gondola!) All Suites are made from sustainably sourced lumber with thatched roofs built by local Cabécar people, tucked among the treetops. Solar panels and water turbines mean little impact on the environment. The simple indigenous Cabécar-inspired architecture, pristine rainforest, and well-appointed accommodations come together to offer an experience like no other. Gimme Shelter!

Costa Rica opens its borders to US travelers October 1. Book your air to SJU or LIR with How Far Adventures.
